FAU Announces Winners of 2009 Business Plan Competition
The Adams Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE), within Florida Atlantic University’s Barry Kaye College of Business, recently announced the winners of its 2009 FAU Business Plan Competition.
FAU students, faculty and members of the business community worked together to create innovative business plans and were eligible to win prizes totaling more than $15,000. A distinct feature of the competition allowed members of the business community to team up with FAU students to enter the competition and compete. The program necessitated community support and provided an opportunity for participants to compete and test their business innovations.
“Students get the traction they need because we show them what is really happening in the business world,” said Kim Gramm, executive director of ACE. “Our students learn by example. Take Scott Adams, the center’s lead donor, as an example. The business plan competition is representative of his entrepreneurial spirit.”
FAU President Frank T. Brogan announced the top three winners in each category as follows:
Limited Investment Track: First Place ($10,000 in cash and prizes) – Andrew Haverstick, Marshall Sklar for “Student Housing Off Campus,” a concept housing solution for FAU’s students and faculty. The intent is to create an on-campus real estate location where the FAU community can go to take care of all of their real estate needs with professional licensed agents. Second Place ($2,500 in cash) – Abraham Cohen, Alex Brazee, Alvaro Gonzalez-Rubio and Chinar Shah for “Bicycle Transit System;” Third Place ($1,500 in cash) – Adam Dier, Mark A. Henry and Tamara Kochen for “4urConvenience.com.”
Investment Intensive Track: First Place ($10,000 in cash and prizes) – Armand V. Jean George, Elliot Ziegelman, Josh Mills, Marie E. Miranda, Mia F. Valdes, and Wayne St. Amand for “FAU TMS Team.” TakeMyStuff.com is a service that will help its customers sell their excess inventory and overstock items found around the house and business. Statistics show that homeowners have, on average, more than $2,000 worth of “stuff” that can be sold for a profit. Second Place ($2,500 in cash) – Jaime Russ, Kathy Fletcher and Michele McCauley for “Boca Mom Inc.;” Third Place ($1,500 in cash) – Freddy Moldt and Jason Langford for “Generation Oxygen.”
The awards ceremony also featured guest speakers that included Gary Keller, executive director of the Institute for the Commercialization of Public Research, and Stefani Duelfer, of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County. The Boys & Girls Club high school team also presented its business venture to the 120 guests in attendance.
At ACE, both students and the community can take individual courses or enroll in one of several degree programs designed for the next generation of entrepreneurs. Committed to diversity, ACE is inclusive of a cross-section of talented students from varying disciplines and colleges at FAU.
